news releaseLacerta Provides Packaging for A.T. Cross Company's new CrossPadBoston, May 1998: Lacerta Group, Inc., a Boston-based custom thermoformed packaging manufacturer, collaborated with the Pen Computing Group of A.T. Cross Company to develop innovative packaging for the companys new CrossPadä portable digital notepad (PDN). The PDN, a new product from A.T. Cross bridges the gap between paper and the PC, began shipping March 31, 1998. CrossPad transforms how users store, organize and share notes by writing ink on a standard pad and uploading their handwriting directly to the PC. As a PC file, the users "digital notes" can be filed, reorganized, faxed , emailed or printed in handwritten form or converted to standard ASCII text for use in virtually all Windowsâ 95 applications. Design, delivery and price were top considerations for the package selection. The packaging for the new product was designed and manufactured by Lacerta Group, Inc. "As a custom thermoformer, Lacerta has in-house design, tooling and moldmaking. Our capabilities were the reason A.T. Cross selected us for this new package. It was extremely important to work from the concept that Cross started with, develop prototypes and then tool and produce on time to meet the product introduction timetable," remarks Lacerta President Ali Lotfi. In order to pass Cross rigorous package testing, Lacerta designed the package using 0.024 PVC. The base has a 2.67" depth of draw, which is considered quite deep for this gauge of material. A Snap-On cover provides for easy assembly once the base is filled with the multiple component parts, including. the specially designed Cross digital pen, which is equipped with a radio frequency (RF) transmitter. The CrossPad, which measures 14" long x 9.8 " wide x .75 high and weighs approximately 2.2 lbs., is the largest single item included in the pack. Also included in the package are IBM Ink Manager software, four AAA batteries for the pad and one AAAA battery for the pen, a serial cable that connects to the PC and five replacement ink cartridges. The 0.024 PVC base and cover are packed in a 1/8" SBS 18-color coated box with a double end flap and front flap The overall package measures 16.4" x 11.6 " x 3.67".
